New Moon Energy: What It Means And A Ritual To Work With It.
The new moon is a multifaceted time period that can feel very ethereal. When we are shrouded in darkness, it can encourage us to go within our hidden realms: the parts of our mind and emotions that aren’t visible to others, and often times even ourself.
It can be the hidden realms of the unconscious mind or perhaps the spiritual planes of existence beyond what we can see with our eyes, particularly because intuition is often heightened.
It’s also very much a time of personal reflection, as well as seed planting. Just as a seed germinates in the darkness of the soil, out of the direct light, so do we begin the growth of an idea, of a new intention, of healing…a seed growing out of our mind -body and spirit.
New moons are also a time where your dreams and creativity feel alive, which can make it a great time to do creative processes, such as drawing, painting, writing, singing, and dancing.
And often times we feel extra emotional during a new moon as it can bring up what needs to be emotional cleansed.
-In Asian cultures, it is celebrated as the beginning of the lunar cycle, and family comes together to feast.
-In Pagan traditions its seen as a time for intention setting and manifesting through ritual.
-In Greek mythology, the new moon is linked to Hecate the goddess of magic and witches, and is seen as the time of divination and spell work.
-Native Americans consider it a time of deep reflection and when the spirit of ancestors are particularly close, so practicing ancestral veneration and communication is fitting.
Each moon phase carries a certain energy, and the new moon is definitely considered a time of reflection on current life situations, so as to identify areas that you're looking for change and growth. When you do that, there should be a natural inclination towards understanding limiting beliefs and patterns that you need to release, in order to make space for that which you desire.
New Moon ritual:
Have music available, a mirror (such as a hand mirror, but if you have a standing mirror where you will be doing this, that will work also). And a journal (be it paper, or your phone notes app).
Begin with gratitude. Gratitude is a very high frequency energy and helps to begin intention setting and manifestation work from a positive outlook. Journal 5 things you are grateful for up to this moment in your life.
Put on a gentle playlist of songs to move your body to. Begin on the ground curled up, as if you are a seed. Slowly over a couple of songs, stretch and move your body as if you are a seed rooting to the Earth with roots, and then sending shoots up above the ground. Move as if you are coming up through the dirt, and stretching into the sun. Sway and move as if rain is coming down to drench you in hydration. Eventually get all the way to standing,( if you can, or sitting up), and into full growth -whether that be a beautiful flower that has bloomed, or a sturdy tree. Continue to move until you feel loose and warm with your blood flowing. Move however your body asks you to- this is not a performance.
From this physical and energetic expansiveness, do a few minutes of connected breath. A continuous breath with no break between the inhale and the exhale.
You may go back to seated if that’s comfortable, and while breathing continuously, think about what seed you are planting with this new moon. What do you want to germinate and grow over the next 30 day cycle (and beyond).
Take your mirror, look into it and say: Mirror of potential reflect my desires, goals and dreams. And see yourself shift into that new reality. Who is that person that aligns with these aspirations? How does she look, talk, walk, behave? How does she spend her time, and her money? Imagine her saying no to anything not in alignment with this version.
Spend some time breathing, and feeling the dreamy New moon energy, and allow any intuitive thoughts to bubble up. Any subconscious thoughts and feelings. Spend time with any that would like some consideration.
Journal anything that comes up.
Close with gratitude for yourself for showing up, and a loving self-hug.
And as I always say, any type of magic, ritual or spell work is only as good as the action you take to follow it up. So while it is indeed powerful, loving and fun to do rituals under different moons, or astrological signs, please remember that you need action to follow that up.
Some actions are to be mindful your thinking. Becoming aware of those limiting beliefs that are keeping you from your manifestations and rewiring your brain for different thinking. As well as working with your nervous system. Those old thoughts and limiting beliefs are going to continue to come up regardless of the magic you've done, (until you’ve healed them), and your system has been wired to those thoughts, inducing chemical reactions in your body; such as increased heartbeat, inner trembling, intense emotional reactions etc. . So your actions are to use your tools, such as movement, breath and journaling to rewire your nervous system to align with the next frequency that you're trying to maintain.
And the new moon energy is perfect for this type of work.
Blessed be by the New moon.
